PIAA 4062 converted to HID
I decided to use my old PIAA 4062 driving lights on the bike, just for long trips but the 85 watt halogen bulbs would have to go. Auxiliary HID lights could cost hundreds of dollars. However, HID conversion kits are downright cheap. $35 on ebay.
I drilled a 3/4" hole in the back of each light case to allow the base of the H3 HID bulb and its wires to protrude.
I modified 1 1/4" pvc pipe caps like so to run the wires and cover the holes in the PIAA shells. The reflectors are so close to the outer shells I couldn't risk using sheet metal screws, hence the 6-32 stainless bolts with threaded nylon spacers.
Ballast mounted with hose clamp
DZZZZT!
All done. I painted the caps and sealed them with black silicone.
Here's the real deal. $600
Mounting brackets: Never ever ever throw away a piece of metal with holes in it. It will come in handy someday.
Hella Optilux 1100 fog lights needed work
These Hella Optilux 1100 fog lights suffered from poor assembly as well as design. The lenses were loose and the shields were contorted and out of position so as to crop the light pattern too low. Light was escaping under the shield too. I trimmed about 3/16" off the bottom of the shields and bent the tabs down on the lens retainer rings to hold the lenses more securely. I filled the gaps between the shield and case with high temperature black silicone.
Case extensions cut from 1 1/4" pvc pipe 9/16" thick will be mounted using the original Hella caps and 4mm x 25mm bolts
